Hi, so I have a 2019 crosstrek and today I was trying to get in and my key wasn't working with the buttons. I put the key in manually and it opened but then a flashing red light with a car and lock on it started flashing. When I tried to start the car all the lights on the dash started flashing and the car wouldn't turn on.I just got a 2024 Crosstrek. I programmed a Pin code and it works fine. I can put the key fob to sleep, leave it in the car then lock the car by pressing the hatch button. Upon returning the Pin code unlocks the car. However if I also disable Keyless Access (proximity), I find that the car will no longer lock with the hatch button.I tried this once on my 2014 Crosstrek. Do not recommend. I live in Michigan and it was the dead of winter. Started the car and then locked it with the manual lock. Walked away. Came back about ten minutes later and the fob would not unlock the door, and the manual key would not either. I assume the manual key is somehow electronic as well.

As long as you turned the car on with the fob you can walk away with it and the car will keep running until you shut the car off.
